Last night, after be suspended for the energy of the performance from Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, I went with my dear two friends Patricia and Nadia to have a dinner and a sort of drinks. During the journey from BAM, in Brooklyn, to the West Village, the tree of us were still in silence. It's really dificult express in words what we saw. Even is still more dificult to express something so big in a language which you don't have "words enough"!
But... Let me try.
BAMBOO BLUES
The Brooklyn Academy of Music is a gorgeous bulding. There's cinemas, theater, restaurant and the amazing Howard Gilmann Opera House, where we'll see the performance. The place it's crowd. I'm so excited, because that is my first time at BAM, and my second time waiting to see the Pina's surprises (the first time it was in Brazil beside my sister, a very important moment for the two of us).
I don't have the best seat, but is a good one. I'm on the balcony, at the first line from right side.
Even I told my friend Nadia that to watch a Pina Bausch's presentation is pretty better be a little far from the stage (because the dancers really use the floor).
Expectations. For Patricia and Nadia it'll be the first time.
The lights turn down.
Still in the dark the music starts. A soft kind of jazz with some Indian influence.
The first dancer is a woman. She is wearing a soft pink long dress.
Her moviments are long. They start at her hands and softly go to her feet.
Pina Bausch is about emotion. And like emotions, the moviments never stop. They keep going, changing, going deeper, going fast. Slow again.
I remenber that a few days ago I told someone that PINA BAUSCH IS ALWAYS ABOUT LOVE. And this performance come to prove that line.
You can listen some people crying around you. I'm crying too.
It looks like the dancers are out of their bodies. It's a dance between body and soul. A dance between lovers. The craziest ones. The passionate ones.
To make clear, in my favorite scene, a man holding another with a mask in his face who is holding a woman - with a mask in her face too. The last two, cannot see anything. They run around the stage, at the beggining in small circles which become to be bigger. They run so fast. One time it looks like they will fall. Suddenly, the only one who can see leave the stage. The lovers are blind. The man take off his mask and leave the woman too. She is coming in the direction of the audience. Four dancer appear and they start to catch the woman and push her in the direction of the others. You can fell she is exausted. One of the man take her mask off. She can see again. She is not blind anymore. One of the last three bring a chair to the middle of the stage. Now is just the couple. They start to run in circles again and you can see weakness and the girl's face. But, like an impulse, a magic kind of action, she jump the chair and from the chair she jump higher to in a strong hug falls down in the arms of her man. And they keep running, and she keeps jumping, and he keeps taking her in his arms. Up to both then fall down.
This is the end of the first act.
I'm in extase.
In the second act everything is white.
There are this big white courtains in the back and a projection of the same courtains being movimented by the wind in all space (floor and back). You can feel that Pina is trying to iluminate our hearts. To make us warm in this rainy and cold night in New York.
There are this beautiful images projected in the white scenario. Beautiful images from Indian people. The dancers are in this craziest repetition of the moviments from the first act.
And everything becomes clear.
What is clear?
I don't know.
It depends on you.
It's all about choices.
And again, I am full of this true light.
